What to Expect

Length

The first session is usually 1 1/2 hours long giving time for both a thorough evaluation and treatment. Later sessions, if needed, may vary from one to two hours.

When to Arrive

Please arrive 10 to 15 minutes early for your first session to fill out paperwork. To save time (new patients), please download and print a Client Intake Form by clicking on the link.

What to Wear

It is important to have as much access as possible for visual evaluation before and during treatment and skin to skin contact during treatment. Therefore, the client should be “comfortably undressed.” With that in mind, please wear or bring:

WOMEN: Sports bra or swimsuit top (or if not comfortable with that, tank top or loose sleevless T-shirt) and LOOSE shorts or swimsuit bottom. A regular bra (NO underwire) and underpants also works well IF you are comfortable with that.

MEN: LOOSE shorts. Some men just wear their undershorts or boxers. That is fine too, as long as you are comfortable.

What NOT to Wear

DO NOT use any lotions, creams, sunscreen, oils, etc. the day of your treatment since MFR requires skin to skin contact without slipping.

Location of the Session

The session will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room. Soft music may be played to help you relax. You will lie on a massage table especially designed for your comfort or at times you may be in a seated position.

During the Session

As the session progresses you may:

  • Experience a sense of letting go, well being, or relaxation
  • Feel a stretching sensation–almost like taffy pulling–as restrictions release
  • Feel heat, cold, pain, tingling, or other sensations in seemingly unrelated parts of your body. Please tell the therapist about these. Feedback is important.
  • Feel different parts of your body (or your whole body) move
  • Have emotional releases
  • Notice immediate improvement

These reactions are natural, positive, and part of the healing process.

After the Session

You may:

  • Experience a temporary increase in your pain or symptoms or even pain in new areas. This may even occur one or more days later.
  • Feel light-headed
  • Experience a temporary emotional change

All of these are normal reactions to the profound but positive changes from the release of fascial restrictions. This period is often followed by remarkable improvement.
